Walk and Talk Therapy in Singapore

Benefits of Walk and Talk Therapy

An alternative to the traditional seated setting of therapy, walk and talk therapy offers the following benefits.

The rhythmic movement of walking increases blood flow to the brain. Not only does this boost our mood, it also enhances our cognitive function and helps us think more clearly.

A growing body of research shows that being out in nature enhances mood and reduces stress. Outdoor counselling also taps into the healing properties of nature as you process your experiences.

This combination of physical movement and being in nature can be immensely helpful in gaining perspective on personal challenges.

When we move our bodies and change our environments, we see aspects of our lives differently. Walking enhances creativity and propels us forward, setting us up for breakthroughs.

Walking side by side during therapy sessions makes individuals feel more at ease to express their thoughts and feelings, and gives them a greater feeling of equality in the therapeutic relationship.

Outdoor sessions also offer opportunities for you to practise skills you've learnt such as mindfulness and grounding techniques.

Things to Note

Walk and talk therapy might be suitable for you if you tend to feel claustrophobic, anxious or restless in traditional face-to-face sessions.

That said, other considerations to make are your physical mobility and personal preferences. Consider, as well, your level of comfort in outdoor settings. For outdoor sessions, it is best you bring a hat, an umbrella and also a bottle of water.

Remember that you can decide how you would like our sessions to be. If you find walk and talk therapy to be unsuitable for you, we can discuss about resuming online or office sessions.

Common Questions

Will we be walking all through the session?
Walk and talk therapy is a dynamic form of therapy, much like a metaphor for life, where we experience changes in our environment and needs. We might walk or sit as we continue our conversation.
Do I need to be fit?
No, it is not physically strenuous. Generally, it is slow to moderate walking and you will decide the pace. However, please check with your doctor to make sure you are physically fit to undertake this and disclose any medical conditions during our initial session.
What are the locations?
The locations for walk and talk therapy are Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park and Punggol Park.
Would confidentiality be an issue?
It may be difficult to ensure confidentiality to the same extent as office sessions. We will discuss this and any other concerns in our initial session, which will be done online via Zoom or in person. Walk and talk therapy will be available only on weekday afternoons where the parks are quieter. It is also important to note that the therapist and client are responsible for their individual safety.
What if the weather is bad?
The weather can be unpredictable in Singapore. We will continue if it rains lightly. To ensure safety and effectiveness of the therapy session, we will need to reschedule if the weather gets severe.
